Lincoln Heights- Virtual Library/Finding the Right Source

Okay, I’m back at Lincoln Heights getting them started on their journey through the Inquiry Process.  I’m going to be working with four classes- two grade 7 and two grade 8.  Today we are going to be starting the exploring phase of the Inquiry cycle and our first stop is the Virtual Library.

It always surprises me how little the students and staff have explored the Virtual Library.  Once I show them what is there, I’m always met with “oohs and aahs”.  Clearly, we have not done such a great job of showcasing all the work that has gone into creating the VL and LLC (Library Learning Commons).

I spent a bit of time talking about the stages of the Inquiry Process:

Exploring:

During this phase, you will:

  • start exploring ideas
  • chose your topic
  • develop research questions

Investigating:

During this phase, you will:

  • decide on your focus
  • design your research plan
  • select information
  • take notes

Processing:

During this phase, you will:

  • analyze the information you have found
  • evaluate ideas
  • organize and synthesize your findings

Creating:

During this phase, you will:

  • extend and transfer your learning
  • assemble your culminating product
  • present your findings to a larger audience
  • assess your own product and learning process

We spent a bit of time talking about the fact that we were just getting started with the exploring phase and that we would start exploring the Virtual Library to familiarize themselves with the different kids of resources available- general reference encyclopedias, information databases, websites/links and primary sources.  We then spent a bit of time talking about finding the right kind of resource for the information we were looking for.  I think the students and teachers found this to be helpful.
